When BenQ asked me to review their new ScreenBar e-Reading LED Lamp, I wasn’t really sure what I’d think of it. I mean, how exciting could a desk lamp really be? Well, when I got it and finally had the time to open it up and set it up on my desk, I was truly surprised! This thing is actually pretty cool, and I’m really impressed with the innovation that BenQ brought to a product that you simply wouldn’t have thought needed any innovation.

So what is the ScreenBar e-Reading LED Lamp exactly and how does it differ from a regular desk lamp? It’s a compact LED light bar that sits on the top of your desktop computer monitor to light up your desk without taking up any of your desk space like conventional desk lamps do. It also has an ambient light sensor that detects the light levels in the space you’re in and adjusts its brightness to give you the most appropriate amount of light to reduce your eye strain. The colour temperature is also adjustable from warm to cool light for your comfort and depending on your preference. Being LED, it uses very little power and simply connects to any USB port.

Looking at pictures online before using it myself, I was skeptical that there would be no reflection or bleed onto my monitor, but there really isn’t! If there is, it’s so minimal that I wasn’t able to see it. It didn’t distract or affect the viewing of my screen at all. In fact, I found it to be much less distracting than my regular desk lamp for a few reasons.

  • I no longer have a light base taking up room on my desk, which is really important as I often have books or papers laid out across my desk.
  • To get the light coverage I wanted on my desk with my old light, I either had the arm of the light in the way of the screen, or the glare of the light shinning in my eye which was annoying. The BenQ ScreenBar e-Reading LED Lamp doesn’t take up space and doesn’t shine in my eyes.
  • Since my old light was like a flood light, it would spill onto the screen, washing out a portion of the screen and making it annoying to work on graphics or other multimedia content where I needed a bit more accuracy. The ScreenBar e-Reading LED Lamp doesn’t spill onto the screen and focuses onto my desk area nicely!

While this may seems like a small thing, my old light had a big power transformer / adapter which would take up space on my power bar – often two to three plug spaces because of its size. The ScreenBar is powered by USB, and I have enough ports in my hub that it’s slightly less annoying than a big power adaptor. A/V geeks like me will appreciate this.

So at the end of the day, the biggest reason I really like the BenQ ScreenBar e-Reading LED Lamp is because it seems to always give me the right amount of light and the right colour temperature which I find much more comfortable. To be honest, I never thought that I would ever like a desk lamp as much as I like this one! I always thought that a lamp is a lamp, and any lamp will do…. But no. This one is very different and a long overdue innovation in desktop lighting. Good work BenQ!! I can’t wait to see what you come up with next.
