About Derreck Kayongo

Founder of the internationally renowned Global Soap Project, Derreck Kayongo was recently named CEO of the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta. He will bring his skills as an orator, entrepreneur, and renowned expert in environmental sustainability and global health to energize a new generation to discuss the serious rights issues around the world.

“This is his greatest strength,” says Atlanta Journal-Constitution writer Matt Kempner of Kayongo, “getting people inspired to see the bigger picture. Convincing them that even the little guy can do something big.”

Kayongo arrived in the United States at the age of 22, having fled a civil war in Uganda with his family 12 years earlier. He went on to graduate from the prestigious Fletcher school of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and he started Global Soap in 2008.

The Global Soap Project takes donated, melted, purified, and reprocessed hotel soap and redistributes it to vulnerable populations around the world. Currently, there are 1,500 hotels that are members of the Global Soap Project Recycling program in the United States alone.

The Global Soap Project earned an endorsement from the American Hotel and Lodging Association in 2013. Kayongo was among CNN’s Top Ten Heroes of the Year in 2011.
Kayongo’s Global Soap Project has been designated for a Day of Recognition by the city of Atlanta on May 5th of each year as Global Soap Project Day.
